Tallahassee, Florida – Hazardous marine and beach conditions are expected along Florida’s Gulf Coast today through Friday morning, prompting Small Craft Advisories and a high risk of rip currents for coastal communities along corridors such as US-98.

According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, strong northwesterly winds of 20 to 25 knots, with gusts up to 30 knots, are forecast across the coastal waters. Seas are expected to build to 5 to 7 feet offshore, with 2 to 3 feet in protected surf zones, creating dangerous conditions for mariners and beachgoers.

The Small Craft Advisory is in effect from Okaloosa and Walton counties eastward to the Suwannee River, covering much of the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend coastal waters. Forecasters warn that wind and wave conditions will be hazardous, particularly for smaller or less-experienced vessels.

In addition to marine hazards, a high risk of rip currents is expected along Gulf County beaches, including areas near Mexico Beach, Port St. Joe, and Cape San Blas. The National Weather Service strongly advises residents and visitors to stay out of the water, especially where red flags are flying.

Officials emphasize that rip currents can quickly pull swimmers away from shore, even experienced swimmers, and are especially dangerous during periods of elevated surf and strong offshore winds.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Friday as winds weaken and seas begin to subside, though residual swell may linger into the afternoon.

For coastal commuters, fishermen, and tourists traveling along US-98, officials recommend monitoring local beach flags, avoiding marine travel in small vessels, and postponing water activities until conditions improve.

Additional marine statements or advisories may be issued if hazardous conditions persist.
