Minneapolis, Minnesota – Much warmer temperatures are expected across much of Minnesota today, followed by a brief period of light wintry precipitation and a cooldown heading into the end of the week.
According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities, highs today will reach the lower 40s across western Minnesota, marking a noticeable warmup for early February. Areas farther east, including the Twin Cities metro, will also see milder conditions compared to recent days. Dry conditions are expected through much of the daytime hours, supporting favorable travel along major corridors such as I-94, I-35, US-52, and US-169.
By Thursday night, a cold front moving through the region will bring chances for freezing drizzle and light snow, particularly across western Minnesota and parts of west-central Wisconsin. While precipitation amounts are expected to be light, the National Weather Service warns that freezing drizzle could create slick spots, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses during the overnight hours.
Behind the front, temperatures will turn colder on Friday, with daytime highs generally ranging from the upper 20s to mid-30s. Some areas of southwestern Minnesota could see morning wind chills dipping below zero, especially near more open stretches of roadway such as US-14 and US-212. Skies are expected to gradually clear through the day as drier air moves in.
The weekend will bring a gradual warming trend once again. Saturday highs are expected to reach the 20s to near 30, while Sunday looks warmer, with highs climbing into the 30s and lower 40s, particularly across southern and western Minnesota. No significant precipitation is expected during the weekend period.
Forecasters note that a more sustained warming trend may develop early next week. Drivers are encouraged to remain cautious Thursday night into early Friday due to the potential for isolated icy conditions.
