Blacksburg, Virginia – Strong and potentially dangerous winds are expected across southwest Virginia beginning Friday afternoon and continuing into Saturday as a powerful cold front moves through the region.

According to the National Weather Service office in Blacksburg, northwest wind gusts between 35 and 50 miles per hour are likely, with gusts reaching up to 60 miles per hour at higher elevations. The strongest winds are expected west of and along the Blue Ridge, peaking Friday night into Saturday morning before gradually easing Saturday night.

Travel impacts are expected along major corridors including Interstate 81, Interstate 77, U.S. Route 460, U.S. Route 11, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. High-profile vehicles such as tractor-trailers, box trucks, and campers may experience hazardous crosswinds, especially on exposed ridges, bridges, and elevated roadways.

The National Weather Service warns that unsecured outdoor objects could be blown around, creating additional roadway hazards. Tree limbs may be brought down by the strong gusts, which could lead to localized power outages and brief road blockages.

Winds will begin increasing Friday afternoon, becoming strongest overnight into early Saturday. While precipitation is not the primary concern, the combination of strong winds and colder air may reduce overall travel comfort and safety.

Motorists are urged to use caution, keep both hands on the wheel, and reduce speed when encountering strong gusts. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should consider delaying travel if possible during peak wind periods.

Students, commuters, and young workers traveling overnight or early Saturday morning may be most affected, particularly in mountainous areas and along ridge-top roadways.

No wind warnings were in effect at the time of the update, but additional advisories may be issued as confidence increases. Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts and secure loose outdoor items ahead of the wind event.
