Minnesota – Headlights glow through low clouds as light snow drifts across the Northland this morning. Pavement looks wet in spots, icy in others, and the line between the two is thin. Even light precipitation is enough to create trouble when temperatures stay locked below freezing.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a mix of light snow and freezing drizzle is expected across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. A thin glaze of ice is possible, especially during the morning and again later today. Snow totals of up to 3 inches are possible in the Arrowhead, with around 2 inches in northern Wisconsin near Iron County.
In Duluth, snow chances continue through midmorning, with occasional freezing drizzle mixing in. Roads such as I-35, U.S. Highway 53, and city streets near the hillside may turn slick quickly. Gusty west winds later today increase blowing snow, reducing visibility at times and making untreated roads hazardous.
Another round of light snow and wintry mix develops late today into early Friday. Additional accumulations remain light, but even small amounts add risk. Ice buildup of a few hundredths of an inch is possible, enough to coat sidewalks, steps, and overpasses. Friday turns colder, with highs only reaching the mid-20s before sharply colder air arrives Friday night.
Looking ahead, the weekend stays cold and mostly cloudy, with highs in the teens Saturday and near 30 Sunday. NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook shows temperatures trending above normal later next week, but winter hazards remain the priority now.
Slow down this morning, leave extra distance, and avoid sudden braking. Conditions may deteriorate quickly where drizzle freezes on contact. Seeing slick spots or reduced visibility where you are? Let us know what you’re encountering.
