North Carolina — Headlights cut through fog and mist across the Piedmont this morning as temperatures hover near freezing. Light snowflakes mix in at times, clinging to windshields and grassy areas. The bigger concern isn’t accumulation, but what’s happening on roads and bridges before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, areas of light snow and patchy black ice remain possible through early morning across western and central North Carolina. Snow showers drifting east from the Blue Ridge may briefly affect the Charlotte metro, especially along elevated surfaces.

Most locations see little more than a trace of snow. However, untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses can turn slick quickly as leftover moisture freezes. I-85, I-77, and secondary roads may develop icy patches, particularly in shaded stretches and near creek valleys. Drivers should slow down and allow extra stopping distance.

Fog adds another layer of risk. Visibility drops at times around Charlotte Douglas International Airport and nearby suburbs. Pedestrians should watch sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots, where thin ice can be hard to spot.

Conditions steadily improve later this morning. Clouds thin, snow chances fade, and temperatures rise into the low 40s by afternoon. Sunshine helps melt lingering slick spots, though colder ground may delay improvement in rural areas.

Friday brings a clean reset. Skies turn sunny, and highs climb into the low 50s. Friday night cools back into the 20s and lower 30s, but dry conditions limit icing concerns.

The weekend looks quiet and seasonable. Saturday reaches the mid-40s, followed by upper 40s Sunday with partial sunshine. Early next week trends warmer, with highs pushing toward 60 by Monday. NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook signals above-normal temperatures, hinting at a February thaw ahead.

Take it slow this morning, especially before sunrise. Seeing slick spots near you? Share what conditions look like on your commute.
