Chicago, Illinois – Drivers across northern Illinois could encounter slippery roads at times Thursday as periodic light wintry precipitation moves through the region, followed by a brief warmup Friday and a sharp turn colder heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a period of light snow is expected Thursday morning through early afternoon, mainly in scattered bands. Accumulation should remain light, but brief bursts of snow could reduce visibility and create slick spots, especially on untreated roads during the morning commute. A few snow showers or pockets of freezing drizzle may linger into early afternoon before activity tapers off.

Another round of wintry weather is possible late Thursday night into Friday morning. Light snow or a wintry mix could develop, particularly near and northeast of the Chicago metro, with a 20 to 40 percent chance of brief travel impacts. Any icing would be localized but could still cause slick conditions during the Friday morning commute.

Friday brings milder temperatures during the day, with highs climbing into the upper 30s to lower 40s before a cold front sweeps through late afternoon. Behind the front, temperatures fall quickly with gusty winds and scattered snow showers possible early Friday evening.

The weekend turns colder and quieter. Highs settle into the 20s Saturday with slightly milder readings Sunday. Residents should stay alert for changing road conditions and monitor updates as wintry precipitation chances continue through the end of the workweek.
