Tucson, Arizona – Unseasonably warm temperatures and increasing winds are expected to impact southern Arizona today and Thursday, raising concerns for travel safety and blowing dust along major roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, high temperatures today will run 4 to 8 degrees above normal west of Tucson and 2 to 6 degrees above normal east of the city. Afternoon highs are expected to reach the lower to mid-80s across much of Pima and Pinal counties, marking one of the warmest days so far this month.

Conditions will become more hazardous Thursday as strong and gusty east winds develop, with sustained speeds of 20 to 25 mph and gusts reaching 35 to 45 mph, particularly in areas exposed to easterly flow. Forecasters warn that blowing dust may reduce visibility, especially in typically dust-prone locations.

Major travel corridors expected to be affected include Interstate 10 between Tucson and Casa Grande, Interstate 19, State Route 86, and portions of State Route 90 near Benson and Willcox. High-profile vehicles traveling along I-10, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours, may experience difficult driving conditions due to crosswinds.

The National Weather Service advises motorists to reduce speed, maintain firm control of steering wheels, and be alert for sudden drops in visibility caused by blowing dust. Drivers encountering dust storms are urged to pull off the roadway completely, turn off lights, and remain in the vehicle until conditions improve.

While no precipitation is expected, the combination of heat, wind, and dry conditions may increase stress on vehicles and outdoor workers. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours.

The warm and windy pattern is expected to persist into Thursday before gradually easing heading into the weekend.

This forecast is based on guidance issued Wednesday afternoon and will be updated if wind advisories are issued.
