Oakland County, MI – Detectives are finalizing their investigation into the drowning death of a 4-year-old Sterling Heights girl who died Friday evening at the Deer Lake Athletic Club in Independence Township, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. Friday to the 600 block of White Lake Road after reports of a possible drowning. When officers arrived, CPR was already being performed by bystanders. Emergency responders transported the child to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.

According to investigators, the victim had been swimming with five other children and two adults. The oldest child present was 12. No lifeguard was on duty, and no life preservers were seen around the pool. The pool ranged from three to five feet deep.

Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard called the incident “a horrific and tragic death that easily could have been avoided,” urging adults to ensure constant supervision of children in or near any pool.

The investigation remains under review and will be submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for further consideration.
