Jackson, Kentucky – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect Tuesday afternoon through late tonight for parts of eastern Kentucky, where accumulating snow is expected to create hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service office in Jackson, the advisory covers Bath, Fleming, Montgomery, and Rowan counties and is in effect from 1 p.m. to midnight EST Tuesday. Snowfall totals are forecast to reach up to 1 inch, with localized accumulations possibly near 2 inches in heavier bands.
Communities within the advisory area include Morehead, Mount Sterling, Flemingsburg, Owingsville, Jeffersonville, and Camargo. Snow is expected to develop during the afternoon hours and continue into the evening, with the Tuesday evening commute most likely to be affected.
Forecasters emphasize that wet snow falling on frozen surfaces from the recent prolonged cold will cause untreated roads to become slick quickly. Even modest snowfall amounts may lead to slippery conditions, especially on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads.
Travel impacts are expected to include reduced traction, slower travel speeds, and longer stopping distances. While widespread heavy snow is not anticipated, the combination of wet snow and frozen ground increases the risk for travel disruptions during peak traffic hours.
The National Weather Service urges motorists to slow down and use caution while traveling and to allow extra time to reach destinations this evening. Pedestrians should also be cautious on sidewalks, stairs, and driveways where icy conditions may develop.
