Washington, District of Columbia – Light snow is possible this afternoon through late tonight across the Baltimore–Washington region, with minor accumulations expected on several major roadways during the Tuesday commute and overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, snowfall amounts are forecast to range from a coating to around one-half inch for much of the Interstate 95 corridor, including Washington, Baltimore, Annapolis, and surrounding suburbs. Areas farther south and west, particularly along I-81, I-64, and portions of I-95 near Fredericksburg and Charlottesville, could see higher totals between 1 and 2 inches, with localized amounts up to 3 inches near the Allegheny Front.

The highest probability of measurable snowfall is expected this evening through late tonight. While a 90% probability scenario shows little accumulation for much of central Maryland and northern Virginia, the high-end forecast indicates a lower-probability scenario where totals increase, especially south of Washington and west of the Blue Ridge.

Roadways including I-95, I-83, I-70, I-270, US-50, and I-81 may develop slick spots, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads. Temperatures are expected to hover near freezing, which may limit accumulation on heavily traveled roads but still allow snow to stick on colder surfaces.

The National Weather Service notes that this is not expected to be a major winter storm, but even light snowfall can create travel slowdowns, especially during evening and overnight hours. Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time and remain alert for changing road conditions.

This system may be most impactful for overnight drivers, early-morning commuters, and freight traffic moving through the I-95 and I-81 corridors before conditions gradually improve later Wednesday.
