Light snow is expected to move across parts of Central Illinois today, creating localized slick travel conditions despite generally minor snowfall amounts.
According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, snow will impact the region in two separate areas. The first area will be along and north of Interstate 74, where snowfall totals are expected to remain one-half inch or less. Snow in this zone is forecast to occur this morning into the afternoon.
A second area of light snow is expected south of a Shelbyville-to-Paris line later today. In this southern zone, snowfall amounts are also expected to stay below one inch, limiting widespread impacts but still creating the potential for slick spots.
Roadways most likely to be affected include Interstate 74, Interstate 55, Interstate 57, U.S. 36, and nearby state routes. While snow amounts will be light, untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses may briefly become slick during periods of falling snow, especially where pavement temperatures remain cold.
The National Weather Service notes that visibility may be reduced at times, particularly during steadier snow showers. Conditions may vary over short distances, with some locations seeing little impact while others experience snow-covered patches.
Snow is expected to taper off later this afternoon and early evening, with no significant accumulation expected after that point. Temperatures today will range from the upper 20s to low 30s, which may limit snow accumulation on heavily traveled roads but still allow snow to stick on lesser-used surfaces.
Drivers are advised to use caution, reduce speeds if encountering slick conditions, and allow extra following distance. Early-day commuters, students, and afternoon travelers should remain weather-aware as light snow moves through Central Illinois.
