A fast-moving winter system is expected to bring widespread accumulating snow to western Pennsylvania beginning Friday and continuing into early Saturday, potentially impacting travel across major roadways.
According to the National Weather Service Pittsburgh, a Clipper system will move into the region on Friday, with high confidence that accumulating snow will occur across most of the area. Snow is expected to begin Friday morning, intensify through the day, and continue into Friday night, before tapering off Saturday morning.
Most locations are forecast to receive 1 to 4 inches of total snowfall, with locally higher amounts possible in the higher elevations. The snow is expected to be dry and fluffy, meaning it will be easy to blow around and may reduce visibility at times, especially in open areas.
The heaviest snowfall rates are expected late Friday morning, which could coincide with daytime travel along Interstate 79, Interstate 70, Interstate 376, and U.S. Route 30. Snow-covered roads and slick conditions are likely to develop quickly, particularly during periods of steadier snowfall.
While winds are not expected to be extreme, the light, powdery nature of the snow may lead to drifting in spots and brief reductions in visibility. Drivers may encounter rapidly changing conditions, especially during the Friday afternoon and evening hours.
Snowfall is expected to gradually diminish late Friday night, with lingering snow showers ending early Saturday morning. Cold temperatures will allow snow to remain on road surfaces into the weekend.
Motorists are advised to plan for slower travel, allow extra stopping distance, and prepare for winter driving conditions. This system may particularly impact early Friday commuters, daytime travelers, and overnight workers across the Pittsburgh metro and surrounding counties.
