Florida – A rare winter chill grips central Florida this morning as cold air settles across neighborhoods, citrus groves, and highways. Frost clings to windshields, lawns crunch underfoot, and heaters hum in homes not used to this kind of cold. Conditions remain dangerous for sensitive plants, pets, and anyone outdoors for long.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a Freeze Warning and Cold Weather Advisory remain in effect until 9 a.m. Sub-freezing temperatures have dropped as low as 27 degrees across inland areas, including parts of Orange, Seminole, Volusia, Brevard, Osceola, and Indian River counties. Wind chills have fallen into the mid-20s, increasing exposure risk.
In the Orlando metro, temperatures hover in the mid-30s, but colder pockets persist away from the urban core. Frost has developed across open areas, bridges, and overpasses. Drivers should watch for slick spots during the early commute, especially along I-4 and secondary roads.
Along the Space Coast, inland Brevard County remains colder than barrier islands, where temperatures may stay just above freezing. Even so, unprotected pipes, outdoor plumbing, and irrigation systems remain vulnerable. Agricultural interests face the greatest risk, with frost capable of damaging crops and tender vegetation.
The cold loosens its grip later today as sunshine returns and highs climb into the 60s. Milder air continues Wednesday and Thursday, with afternoon temperatures rising into the 70s. Another chance of showers arrives late week, but no additional freezes are expected for now.
Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook suggests above-normal temperatures may return to Florida late next week, hinting at a more springlike pattern.
Protect pets and plants, limit early-morning outdoor activity, and allow extra time on the roads. How cold did it get where you are this morning?
