Western Maryland and Eastern West Virginia – Accumulating mountain snow is expected Tuesday afternoon through late Tuesday evening along and west of the Allegheny Front, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory for higher elevations.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, 2 to 3 inches of snow are forecast in advisory areas, mainly across western Maryland and eastern West Virginia. Elsewhere east of the mountains, lighter snow amounts are expected, with a coating up to 1 inch possible Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night.
Forecasters say snow will begin developing Tuesday afternoon, with impacts increasing through the evening before tapering near midnight Tuesday night. The greatest travel concerns are expected during the late afternoon and evening hours, when snowfall rates briefly increase in the mountains.
The advisory primarily affects areas along and west of the Allegheny Front, including higher elevations near Interstate 68, U.S. Route 219, and surrounding mountain roads. The National Weather Service indicates a moderate travel impact risk in these locations, with hazardous driving conditions and potential delays likely during peak snowfall.
Road conditions may deteriorate quickly where snow accumulates, especially on untreated mountain highways, secondary roads, bridges, and higher-elevation passes. Visibility may also be reduced at times during steadier snow.
East of the advisory area, including parts of central Maryland and the Washington region, snow impacts are expected to be limited, though brief slick spots could still develop during the evening.
Drivers planning travel through western Maryland or eastern West Virginia Tuesday afternoon or evening are advised to monitor conditions closely, reduce speed, and allow extra travel time. Even modest snowfall amounts can lead to significant impacts in mountainous terrain.
Additional updates are expected as the event approaches, and residents are encouraged to follow official National Weather Service statements for the latest information.
