Oneida County, NY – A routine traffic stop in the Town of Kirkland Sunday afternoon led to the arrest of a New York Mills man after deputies discovered an active order of protection violation.
According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, the arrest occurred on Sunday, February 1, at approximately 10:45 p.m., when a sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop on Nissan Rogue traveling eastbound on State Route 5. The stop followed a vehicle and traffic violation investigation.
During the stop, deputies identified the passenger as Colin J. Volo, 28, of New York Mills. Investigators determined that Volo was allegedly in violation of an active order of protection involving the driver of the vehicle.
After further investigation at the scene, deputies took Volo into custody without incident. He was transported to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Building for processing.
Volo was arrested and charged with Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree, a Class A misdemeanor, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities said the charge stems directly from the alleged violation of the court-issued order of protection.
Following processing, Volo was transported to the Oneida County Jail, where he was held pending arraignment in Centralized Arraignment Part (CAP) Court.
No additional charges were announced, and the identity of the driver was not released. Deputies did not report any injuries connected to the incident.
Officials emphasized that orders of protection are enforced strictly under New York law and violations can result in immediate arrest, even during unrelated encounters such as traffic stops.
The case remains pending in court. All charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
