Atlanta, Georgia – Patchy black ice may impact parts of north and central Georgia this morning as cold overnight temperatures allow melted snow and moisture to refreeze on roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, temperatures across much of the region dropped into the 20s overnight, with wind chills in the teens early Monday. These conditions increase the risk that lingering snowmelt, especially from areas that saw snowfall over the weekend, has refrozen on roads.

Forecasters warn that patchy black ice is most likely in eastern portions of Georgia, particularly in shaded or sheltered areas, as well as on bridges and overpasses. The ice can be difficult to see and may lead to sudden loss of traction for drivers.

Major travel corridors including Interstate 85 through metro Atlanta, I-20 toward Augusta, I-75 through central Georgia, and I-985 near Gainesville may experience isolated slick spots during the morning commute. Conditions can vary significantly over short distances.

Despite the cold start, temperatures are expected to warm steadily through the afternoon, climbing into the 40s across much of north Georgia and reaching the low 50s in parts of central Georgia. As temperatures rise, road conditions are expected to improve.

The National Weather Service notes that the lack of strong winds will make conditions feel less harsh than previous cold outbreaks, but the cold remains significant enough to pose travel risks early in the day.

Morning commuters, school transportation, and early-shift workers are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert, especially on elevated roadways and in shaded areas where ice may persist longer.

Drivers should use caution until temperatures rise above freezing and allow any remaining ice to melt. Residents are encouraged to monitor local conditions and forecasts for updates throughout the day.
