Springfield, Illinois – Another round of light snow Tuesday could create slick travel conditions across central Illinois, particularly along and south of Interstate 72.
According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, temperatures this week are expected to trend upward toward seasonal normals, but overnight lows Tuesday and Wednesday night will remain below normal, increasing the risk for refreezing on road surfaces.
Forecasters indicate that around one-half inch of snow is possible Tuesday, mainly along and south of the I-72 corridor, including areas near Springfield, Decatur, and Danville. While snowfall amounts are expected to be light, roads could still become slick, especially during the evening and overnight hours.
High temperatures Tuesday are forecast to range from 27 to 34 degrees, with colder air returning overnight. Tuesday night lows are expected to fall between 8 and 16 degrees, allowing any moisture on roadways to freeze. Wind chills may drop to 3 to 10 degrees below zero late Tuesday night.
Additional flurries are possible in southern portions of the region tonight, though accumulation is expected to be minimal. Wednesday is forecast to remain cold, with highs generally between 24 and 30 degrees, followed by another cold night with lows ranging from 5 to 15 degrees.
Major travel routes including I-72, I-55, and I-74, as well as secondary roads and overpasses, may experience slick spots, particularly during early morning and nighttime travel. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and allow extra time when commuting.
Students, early-shift workers, and long-distance commuters may feel the greatest impact due to the timing of snow and cold overnight temperatures.
Residents should continue to monitor forecast updates and road conditions as minor changes in snowfall or temperature could affect travel conditions.
