Iowa–Illinois — Cold air settles along the Mississippi River this morning as clouds hang low and engines hum a little longer. Sidewalks feel stiff underfoot, and exposed skin stings quickly. Winter still has control early today, but the pattern is already loosening its grip.
Temperatures hover in the mid-20s across the Quad Cities early, with wind chills dipping into the teens. Winds from the west keep the air brisk, especially near open stretches and river crossings. Roads remain mostly dry, but cold pavement raises concerns for isolated slick spots during early travel.
Clouds gradually thin later today. Highs climb near 28, offering only limited relief. Tonight turns colder again, with lows near 17. A slight chance of light snow or flurries develops late, but no accumulation is expected. Even light flakes could briefly reduce visibility on I-74, I-80, and bridge decks.
Tuesday brings calmer weather. Sunshine returns, and highs reach around 29. Tuesday night drops sharply into the lower teens, reinforcing frozen ground. Wednesday stays dry and cold, with highs near 29 and increasing clouds at night.
The bigger change arrives Thursday. Temperatures surge close to 39 under partly sunny skies, a noticeable February shift. Melting during the day may create wet pavement, followed by refreezing after sunset. Flash freezing becomes a concern, especially on untreated roads and shaded intersections.
Looking toward the Feb 6–8 weekend, conditions trend quieter. Highs range from the low 30s to upper 30s, hinting at a gradual moderation without major storms. Even so, winter hazards linger with freeze-thaw cycles.
Plan extra time during early drives today and tonight. Dress for biting cold now, but prepare for changing conditions by midweek. Are you seeing slick spots or just cold pavement where you are this morning?
