North Carolina – A sharp chill grips the air this morning as headlights reflect off glossy pavement and frost clings to parked cars. The cold feels heavier than usual, and slick spots linger where yesterday’s moisture froze solid before sunrise. Conditions remain hazardous early, especially for drivers.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Winter Weather Advisory and Cold Weather Advisory remain in effect for central North Carolina through mid-morning. Wind chills have hovered near zero in some locations, while residual snow, slush, and water have frozen on roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Across the state, arctic air continues to spill south, part of a broader eastern U.S. cold pattern tied to a deeply frozen Great Lakes region. That locked-in cold increases the risk of black ice even where skies stay clear. Central North Carolina sits on the southern edge of that cold dome, making timing critical for commuters.

In the Raleigh–Durham area, temperatures start in the teens and climb slowly. Sunshine helps later, but shaded roads and elevated surfaces may stay icy well into the morning. Drivers should slow down, especially on I-40, I-440, and secondary roads. Pedestrians should watch sidewalks that appear dry but feel slick.

By Tuesday, temperatures rebound into the 40s with increasing clouds. Moisture returns Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing rain and possibly a brief rain-snow mix early Wednesday. While accumulation looks limited, colder ground temperatures could still cause slick patches at daybreak.

Midweek conditions improve gradually, but winter remains active. Another system late in the week may bring additional rain or snow chances before a warmer trend develops into next week. For now, winter safety matters most. Dress in layers, protect pets, and allow extra travel time this morning.
