Buffalo, New York – After nearly nine consecutive days of temperatures in the teens and colder, parts of western and north-central New York are expected to see a modest warmup Monday, with afternoon highs returning to the 20s.

According to the National Weather Service Buffalo office, daytime temperatures Monday are forecast to reach the low to mid-20s across much of the region. While this marks a noticeable improvement from recent bitter cold, forecasters note that these values will still be nearly 10 degrees below early February normal.

The temperature rebound will be accompanied by variable sunshine, with cloud cover fluctuating through the day. Despite some sunshine, cold ground temperatures will limit melting, especially in shaded areas and on untreated surfaces.

Communities along Interstate 90 from Buffalo to Rochester, Interstate 190 near Niagara Falls, and Interstate 86 across the Southern Tier will experience similar conditions, with highs generally ranging from 22 to 28 degrees. Roads that remain snow-covered or icy from recent cold may continue to pose localized travel issues, particularly during the morning hours.

The National Weather Service emphasized that while this warmup brings relief from extreme cold, it does not signal a return to normal February temperatures. Overnight lows are still expected to drop back into the teens, allowing refreeze of any moisture that develops during the day.

Residents are encouraged to remain cautious when traveling, especially on bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled roads where ice may persist. Drivers should allow extra stopping distance and remain alert for slick spots.

This gradual moderation may be most noticeable for commuters, students, and outdoor workers who have endured an extended stretch of very cold weather.

Forecasters advise continuing to monitor daily updates, as temperatures are expected to fluctuate through the week with additional periods of cold possible.
