Nashville, Tennessee – A rapid shift in weather conditions is expected across Middle Tennessee this week, with another cold morning followed by a warmup and widespread rain Tuesday that may finally melt remaining snow and ice along major corridors including Interstate 40, Interstate 65, and Interstate 24.

According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, temperatures will dip back toward 20 degrees or colder Sunday night into Monday morning, resulting in another sub-freezing start to the day. Despite the cold morning, sunshine and southerly flow will allow temperatures to rebound Monday afternoon into the 40s, beginning a warming trend.

The primary weather impact arrives Tuesday, when forecasters indicate an 80 percent chance of rain across the region. High temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 40s to lower 50s, providing enough warmth to help eliminate lingering snow and ice from last weekend’s winter weather.

While rain will be the dominant precipitation type Tuesday, the National Weather Service notes a medium chance that rain could briefly change to light snow Tuesday night as colder air filters back into the area. At this time, no accumulation is expected, but isolated slick spots cannot be ruled out late Tuesday night into early Wednesday, particularly on bridges and elevated roadways.

By Wednesday morning, temperatures are forecast to range from the mid-20s to lower 30s, with any light snow ending early and conditions improving through the day. Highs Wednesday are expected to reach the upper 30s to low 40s.

Officials note that the combination of warming temperatures and rainfall should significantly improve travel conditions by midweek. Motorists are still urged to use caution during early morning hours when refreezing is possible.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates as precipitation timing and temperature trends become more refined over the next 24 to 48 hours.
