Providence, Rhode Island – Bitter cold and strong winds are expected to grip Rhode Island beginning Saturday, Feb. 8, setting up several days of hazardous winter conditions that could affect travel, utilities, and outdoor safety across the state.
According to the National Weather Service, a surge of Arctic air will move into southern New England from Feb. 8 through Tuesday, Feb. 11, with sustained winds driving wind chill values well below zero at times. The coldest and most dangerous conditions are expected overnight and during early morning hours, though cold air and gusty winds will linger throughout the day.
Across Providence and surrounding communities, wind chills are expected to dip into subzero territory, making even short periods outdoors risky without proper winter protection. Along the coastline, strong winds may place added stress on power infrastructure and contribute to difficult travel for high-profile vehicles. Inland areas could see icy patches develop on untreated roads during the coldest periods.
State officials urge residents to limit outdoor exposure, dress in layered, wind-blocking clothing, and ensure pets and vulnerable neighbors have adequate warmth. Drivers are advised to prepare for cold-related vehicle issues and allow extra time for travel.
The cold pattern is expected to ease after Feb. 11, though additional wind chill advisories or warnings may be issued as conditions evolve.
