Spokane, Washington – Spokane’s winter snowfall total remains unusually low, highlighting one of the least snowy seasons the city has seen in years.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Spokane, the city has recorded just 14 inches of snow so far this winter, which is 18.9 inches below normal for this point in the season. Forecasters noted the striking comparison that a single recent storm along the North Carolina coast produced more snow than Spokane has received all winter.

The comparison came as the National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City, North Carolina, reported a snow depth of 15 inches at its office early Sunday morning. Snowfall there was expected to taper off through the morning hours as the system moved east.

In contrast, Spokane’s winter has been dominated by milder temperatures and fewer snow-producing systems, limiting accumulation across the region. Major travel corridors such as Interstate 90 and U.S. Highway 2 have seen fewer prolonged snow impacts than typically expected during mid-winter.

While the lack of snow has reduced the frequency of hazardous winter driving conditions, it also raises concerns about seasonal snowpack, which plays an important role in spring runoff and water resources across eastern Washington.

For commuters, students, and workers, the below-normal snowfall has meant fewer snow-covered roadways and fewer storm-related disruptions this season. However, weather officials caution that winter is not over, and conditions can still change in the weeks ahead.

The National Weather Service emphasized that seasonal snowfall totals can fluctuate significantly from year to year, and a slow winter does not rule out late-season snow events.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed as winter continues and to monitor forecasts for any potential late-season storms that could impact the Spokane area.
