Texas – Cold air settles low across the South Plains, frosting windshields and stiffening fingers as the day begins. A thin haze lingers near the ground, and the chill feels sharper than recent mornings. Winter still has a foothold across West Texas, even as a rapid warm-up waits just ahead.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, temperatures dropped into the mid-20s early this morning, with areas of freezing fog possible across the southern Panhandle and northwest South Plains. Visibility briefly dipped at times, especially on rural roads and open stretches leading into Lubbock. While widespread hazardous weather is not expected, early travel requires extra care.

Sunshine quickly improves conditions by late morning. Pavement dries and temperatures rebound into the lower 60s this afternoon. That thaw sets up a classic February risk. Moisture left behind can refreeze after dark as readings fall back near freezing. Bridges, overpasses, and shaded roadways may turn slick again before Monday morning.

By Tuesday, the pattern flips. Highs climb into the lower 60s under mostly sunny skies, with southwest winds adding a mild feel. Nights remain cool, but the harsh edge of winter fades through midweek. Wednesday and Thursday bring continued sunshine and highs near 60, gradually climbing toward the upper 60s by late week.

This local swing mirrors a broader national setup. Arctic air remains entrenched across the Midwest and East, while West Texas sits on the warmer fringe. With the Great Lakes nearly half frozen, cold air still funnels south at times, keeping sharp temperature changes in play through early February.

Slow down during early drives, protect pets and pipes, and stay alert for refreezing after sunset. Winter may loosen its grip, but it is not done yet.
