New York – Frost clings to parked cars, sidewalks squeak under boots, and the cold hits hard enough to sting exposed skin across the Southern Tier this morning. Wind-driven cold is the main threat right now, turning short walks into a race back indoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning, with wind chills ranging from 15 to 20 degrees below zero across central New York and northeast Pennsylvania. At these levels, frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes.
Temperatures in Binghamton sit near zero early, with gusty northwest winds pushing wind chills closer to minus 15. Isolated flurries fade quickly, but the bigger concern is what drivers cannot see. Melted snow from prior days refreezes fast, especially on bridges, hills, and untreated side streets near Route 17 and I-81.
Conditions slowly improve Monday as clouds break and highs climb into the mid-20s. That break does not last long. By Tuesday, temperatures approach the upper 20s with increasing clouds. Light snow or spotty mixed precipitation may develop later Tuesday into Tuesday night as another system tracks nearby. Any moisture could freeze after sunset, creating slick travel into Wednesday morning.
Later in the week, colder air reloads. Additional snow showers become more likely by Friday, with highs struggling to reach the upper 20s. NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook keeps much of the Northeast colder than normal into the first full week of February, even as warmer air surges across the western U.S.
Dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and check on neighbors who may lack reliable heat. Traveling today or later this week? Let us know how road conditions look where you are.
