Detroit, Michigan – Southeast Michigan is experiencing another bitterly cold start Sunday morning as temperatures near sunrise range from -10°F to 5°F, creating hazardous conditions for early travel along major corridors including Interstate 94, Interstate 75, and Interstate 96.
According to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac office, despite the frigid start, abundant sunshine is expected to help temperatures recover into the lower to middle 20s this afternoon. Even with the warming, temperatures will remain well below seasonal averages, especially during the morning commute hours.
Forecasters report that cold air remains firmly in place across the region, with wind chills making conditions feel even colder during the early morning hours. Drivers traveling before mid-morning should be prepared for reduced vehicle performance, icy patches on untreated roads, and increased strain on car batteries.
Looking ahead, the National Weather Service notes that a period of very light snow is possible on Monday, with accumulations ranging from a dusting to around one-half inch. While snowfall amounts are expected to be minor, any accumulation could lead to slick spots on roads, particularly during the morning and evening commute periods.
High temperatures are expected to remain in the 20s through much of the upcoming week, reinforcing a prolonged stretch of winter conditions across southeast Michigan. Overnight lows will continue to dip into the single digits and teens, increasing the risk for refreezing on road surfaces after sunset.
Officials encourage residents to dress in layers, limit prolonged exposure to the cold, and check on vulnerable individuals. Motorists are urged to allow extra time for travel, especially during early morning hours when temperatures are lowest.
While no major winter storm is expected, the National Weather Service emphasizes that persistent cold alone can pose safety risks, particularly for commuters, students, and outdoor workers.
Residents are advised to monitor forecast updates as conditions evolve into the new week.
