Gaylord, Michigan – After a cold start to the day, conditions across northern Michigan are expected to change late Sunday as snow develops overnight and continues into Monday morning, potentially affecting travel along major routes including Interstate 75, U.S. Highway 131, and M-32.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, temperatures will climb into the low to upper 20s Sunday afternoon under partly to mostly sunny skies. Clouds will increase Sunday night as the next weather system approaches, bringing a renewed chance for snow to eastern Upper Michigan and northwest lower Michigan.

Forecasters expect snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches across eastern portions of the Upper Peninsula and northwest lower Michigan by Monday morning. Farther south into northern lower Michigan, including areas along US-131 and US-23, snowfall amounts are expected to be around an inch or less, though even light accumulations may lead to slick travel conditions.

The snow is expected to begin late Sunday night and persist into the Monday morning commute, when pavement temperatures may still be cold enough to allow snow to accumulate on untreated roads. Elevated and rural roadways may be especially vulnerable.

Following the snow, the midweek period is expected to trend quieter, with limited precipitation chances. However, colder air is forecast to return, particularly by Tuesday, when daytime highs may struggle to climb out of the teens and lower 20s.

Motorists traveling overnight or early Monday are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Drivers should also monitor local road conditions, especially in areas where snow bands may briefly intensify.

While this event is not expected to be a major winter storm, the National Weather Service emphasizes that even minor snowfall can create hazardous driving conditions when temperatures remain below freezing.

Residents are advised to stay alert for forecast updates as timing and snowfall placement become clearer.
