Boston, Massachusetts – A prolonged stretch of below-normal temperatures is expected to affect eastern Massachusetts during the Feb. 8–14 period, increasing cold exposure risks and creating potential travel impacts along major corridors including Interstate 90, Interstate 93, and Route 128.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, confidence is increasing in a colder-than-average pattern settling across New England during the second week of February. The 8–14 day temperature outlook places much of Massachusetts in a zone favoring below-normal temperatures, with the highest probabilities across eastern and coastal areas.

The Climate Prediction Center’s experimental hazardous temperature outlook highlights a moderate to high risk of hazardous cold from Feb. 8 through Feb. 11, particularly across interior and coastal New England. This period aligns with strong signals for overnight lows dropping well below freezing, increasing the risk of frostbite for prolonged outdoor exposure and placing additional strain on heating systems.

Local temperature forecasts for the Boston area show daytime highs generally hovering in the upper 20s to low 30s, with overnight lows frequently falling into the single digits and teens. Wind exposure near open roadways such as I-90 and I-93 may further reduce apparent temperatures during overnight and early morning hours.

The colder pattern follows a relatively milder start to February, but forecasters note that the transition back to sustained cold could catch commuters and residents off guard. Travelers should prepare for colder vehicle start conditions and allow extra time during early morning commutes when temperatures are lowest.

While no specific winter storm systems are included in this outlook, officials emphasize that persistent cold alone can pose safety risks, particularly for vulnerable populations, outdoor workers, and those traveling during overnight hours.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts through the week as confidence increases closer to the affected period.
