Norfolk, Virginia – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across portions of northeast North Carolina and southeast Virginia until 7 PM EST Sunday, as heavy snow, powerful winds, and whiteout conditions create dangerous and potentially life-threatening travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, additional snowfall of 5 to 10 inches is expected, with localized amounts exceeding 10 inches possible across southern and eastern Currituck County. Wind gusts may reach up to 60 mph, producing blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.

The warning includes northeast North Carolina, affecting Pasquotank, Camden, and Currituck counties, as well as southeast Virginia, including Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach. Communities such as Elizabeth City, Kitty Hawk, Corolla, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake are within the warning area.

Forecasters warn that whiteout conditions are likely, making travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening at times. Snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and strong winds could lead to widespread travel disruptions. Gusty winds may also bring down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages.

The most severe conditions are expected Saturday night through Sunday afternoon, with limited improvement anticipated until Sunday evening as the storm system exits the region. Emergency officials strongly urge residents to delay all non-essential travel.

Drivers in North Carolina can check road conditions at DriveNC.gov, while Virginia motorists can call 511 for the latest updates. Anyone who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight.
