Atlanta, Georgia — Snow showers moving across Georgia Saturday are creating hazardous travel conditions and setting the stage for dangerous cold through the weekend, particularly along major roadways including Interstates 75, 85, and 20.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, snow activity was delayed by one to three hours Saturday morning but remains on track to impact much of the state. East-central Georgia is expected to see snow develop from mid to late morning and continue into the evening, while north Georgia will experience snowfall through the morning and into the mid to late afternoon.
Forecasters said the bulk of snowfall is expected between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. Heavier snow bands may produce accumulations of 3 to 6 inches across portions of north and eastern Georgia, especially west of the I-75 corridor. Areas farther west may see lower totals ranging from a half-inch to 3 inches.
Road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly as snow accumulates, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces. Travel along I-75, I-85, and I-20 may become difficult during peak snowfall, with reduced visibility and snow-covered lanes.
Beyond snowfall, dangerously cold air will settle into the region overnight. Wind chills are forecast to drop into the minus 5 to 5 degree range Saturday night into Sunday morning, increasing the risk of frostbite for anyone exposed for extended periods.
Officials urge residents to limit travel during periods of heavy snow, allow extra time for essential trips, and prepare for extreme cold conditions. The combination of snow and cold may impact weekend commuters, delivery drivers, and students returning to campus.
