Jackson, Kentucky – Bitter cold conditions will continue across eastern Kentucky through the weekend and into Monday, with dangerously low wind chills and limited daytime warming, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Jackson reports high temperatures Saturday only reaching the mid to upper teens, with overnight lows dropping into the single digits across much of the region. Wind chills are expected to fall to near or below zero at times, with some locations experiencing sub-zero wind chills, especially during the overnight and early morning hours through Monday.

Forecast data shows minimum wind chills ranging from -5°F to 5°F in several eastern Kentucky communities, including higher elevations and more exposed areas. These conditions significantly increase the risk of frostbite in as little as 30 minutes and make prolonged outdoor exposure hazardous.

Light snow showers that affected parts of the region earlier are tapering off, with little additional accumulation expected. However, lingering cold temperatures may allow patchy slick spots to persist on untreated roads, bridges, and higher-elevation routes. Drivers should remain cautious along KY-15, US-23, US-119, KY-80, and KY-27, especially during overnight and early morning travel.

The National Weather Service urges residents to take cold-weather precautions, including wearing layered clothing, limiting time outdoors, and ensuring pets have adequate shelter. Exposed pipes should be protected to reduce the risk of freezing, particularly during overnight lows.

A gradual warming trend is expected to begin early next week. High temperatures are forecast to climb into the 30s by Monday and reach the 40s by Tuesday, easing the prolonged cold.

These conditions may be especially challenging for early-morning commuters, outdoor workers, and those without reliable heating through the weekend.
