Binghamton, New York — A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through Sunday morning across central New York and northeast Pennsylvania as an arctic air mass continues to grip the region, according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.
Early Saturday morning temperatures ranged from about +10°F to -5°F, with colder readings possible in northern Oneida County where lows may dip to around -10°F if skies briefly clear. Gusty winds are combining with the cold to produce wind chill values between 0°F and -15°F, creating hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors.
Forecasters say conditions will worsen again late Saturday night into Sunday morning as skies partially clear and northwest winds increase. Overnight low temperatures are expected to fall to between +5°F and -10°F, while wind chills are forecast to plunge to -15°F to -25°F across much of the region.
Travelers along major corridors including Interstate 81, Interstate 86, New York Route 17, and U.S. Route 11 should be prepared for bitter cold, especially during overnight and early morning hours. While widespread snowfall is not expected, the extreme cold can quickly turn any residual moisture into icy patches on untreated roads and bridges.
Communities affected include Binghamton, Syracuse, Elmira, Ithaca, Cortland, Oneonta, and surrounding areas. The prolonged exposure to cold temperatures increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, particularly for those without adequate shelter or proper winter clothing.
Officials urge residents to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and bring pets indoors. Those using alternative heating sources should exercise caution to reduce the risk of fire or carbon monoxide exposure.
Temperatures are expected to slowly moderate early next week, but conditions will remain below seasonal averages for several days. Residents are encouraged to monitor official forecasts and advisories as the cold wave continues.
