Michigan’s rivers creak and groan this morning as extreme cold locks ice in place, then nudges it downstream. In Northern Michigan, that shifting ice may be the next problem to watch.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, ice jams are possible on area rivers today and tonight across Eastern Upper Michigan and Northern Lower Michigan. These jams can lead to sudden, localized flooding, even without heavy rain or snow.

In Gaylord, temperatures hover near 7 degrees early this morning, with wind chills close to 8 below zero. The air feels sharp and dry. Ice thickens fast overnight, then cracks during daytime warming. That freeze-thaw cycle increases pressure on rivers like the Au Sable, Manistee, and smaller tributaries across Otsego and surrounding counties.

Drivers should remain alert near low-lying roads, bridges, and river-adjacent routes, especially where water can spill quickly. Flooding from ice jams can occur with little warning and may recede just as fast. Avoid walking on river ice, which can shift or break without notice.

Looking ahead, the cold eases slightly Sunday as highs climb into the mid-20s under sunshine. Any melting during the afternoon may refreeze after dark, creating slick spots on untreated roads and sidewalks.

By late Sunday night into Monday, attention shifts back to snow. The National Weather Service indicates snow showers developing, with the best chance Monday morning. Accumulations appear light for now, generally under an inch, but visibility may drop during bursts of snow.

The broader pattern keeps winter firmly in place through the first week of February. More snow chances return midweek, and river ice concerns may linger as temperatures fluctuate.
