North Carolina — Snow bands thicken along the coast this morning as wind whips across docks and marshes. Visibility drops fast, and wet pavement turns slushy within minutes. Conditions are deteriorating quickly across eastern North Carolina, especially near Morehead City.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning through Sunday afternoon for Carteret County and surrounding areas. Snowfall totals between 8 and 12 inches are expected in spots, with locally higher amounts possible. Northeast winds gusting up to 45 mph will cause blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions at times.
Snow continues to intensify through the day, becoming heavy by afternoon. Travel could become dangerous quickly, especially along U.S. Route 70 and bridges near the coast. Drivers should expect slick roads, sudden visibility loss, and delays. If travel is unavoidable, pack emergency supplies and allow extra time.
Behind the snow, an Extreme Cold Warning takes effect tonight and continues into Monday morning. Temperatures drop into the teens, while wind chills fall near or below zero. Exposed skin can suffer frostbite in less than 30 minutes. Power outages are possible as strong winds strain infrastructure and bring down tree limbs.
Sunday brings gradual improvement in snowfall, but bitter cold lingers. Sunshine returns late, yet highs struggle to reach the mid-20s. Melted snow may refreeze after sunset, creating flash-freeze conditions on untreated roads and walkways.
Early next week offers a brief warming trend. Highs rebound into the upper 30s Monday and mid-40s Tuesday. However, meteorologists are already monitoring another system midweek that could bring rain and lingering cold air into the first full week of February.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, protect pets and pipes, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Conditions may change rapidly as bands shift.
