Virginia – Snow whips sideways across coastal highways as strong winds roar in from the Atlantic. Visibility drops fast. Sand and sleet rattle against windows as winter conditions intensify across Southeast Virginia this morning.

According to the National Weather Service office in Wakefield, a Winter Storm Warning, High Wind Warning, Extreme Cold Warning, and Coastal Flood Warning are all in effect for the Virginia Beach area. Snow develops quickly and becomes heavy at times, with 1 to 3 inches expected near the coast and higher totals inland. Gusts up to 55 mph are possible, creating blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions.

Travel will be difficult through the day. Portions of I-64, I-264, and surface roads near Oceana and Dam Neck may become snow-covered and slick. Snow that partially melts during brief daylight breaks may refreeze quickly, raising the risk of flash freezing after sunset.

Temperatures struggle to reach the upper 20s, while wind chills fall into the single digits. Prolonged exposure could lead to frostbite. Power outages are possible as strong winds combine with snow and icy buildup.

Along the coast, rising tides and strong onshore winds increase the threat of minor coastal flooding. Low-lying roads near the Chesapeake Bay, Back Bay, and portions of Shore Drive may briefly flood around high tide Sunday.

Conditions gradually improve late Sunday night as winds ease and skies begin to clear. Monday turns sunnier, with highs near 37 degrees, offering a slow thaw. By Tuesday, temperatures rebound into the low 40s, though icy patches may linger in shaded areas.

Plan extra travel time, secure loose outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary coastal driving. Cold and wind remain dangerous. What conditions are you seeing near your neighborhood right now?
