Massachusetts – Breath turns sharp and visible with every step outside as bitter cold grips eastern Massachusetts early this morning. Sidewalks crunch. Harbor winds cut through layers. Winter hazards are stacking up fast.

According to the National Weather Service office in Boston/Norton, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning. Wind chills have dropped as low as 15 to 20 degrees below zero across parts of eastern and northeastern Massachusetts, including the Boston metro. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in minutes.

Actual temperatures sit near 8 degrees in Boston, with northwest winds keeping it feeling far colder. Roads are mostly dry for now, but shaded areas and bridges remain slick. Drivers should watch for black ice, especially during the early commute.

Attention then turns to the coast. A Coastal Flood Advisory goes into effect Sunday morning and lasts into Monday afternoon. High tides combined with building seas may lead to minor coastal flooding in low-lying shoreline areas. According to forecasters, vulnerable spots include portions of Boston Harbor, the North Shore, and coastal sections of Plymouth County. Some roads near the water may briefly flood around times of high tide.

Sunday brings increasing clouds and a chance of snow, though little accumulation is expected. Highs climb into the mid-20s, offering slight relief from the deep freeze. Sunday night stays cold, with lows in the teens as winds remain active.

Monday and Tuesday trend brighter and somewhat milder. Highs reach the lower 30s Monday and near freezing Tuesday. Even so, repeated thawing and refreezing will keep travel tricky at times.

Limit time outdoors this morning, dress in layers, and secure coastal property ahead of high tides. If you live near the shoreline, plan alternate routes. How cold did it feel where you stepped outside today?
