South Carolina – Snow streaks across wind-swept roads as winter bears down hard on the Upstate and neighboring western North Carolina. Trees sway, visibility drops, and travel conditions deteriorate quickly across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Sunday morning, alongside an Extreme Cold Warning. Heavy snow continues across northeast Georgia, the Upstate of South Carolina, and the western Piedmont of North Carolina. Additional accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are possible, especially along the foothills and higher elevations.

Strong northeast winds gusting over 25 mph are blowing snow across roadways, sharply reducing visibility. Sections of I-85, I-26, and secondary mountain roads could become impassable. Power outages are possible as heavy snow loads stress trees and lines.

Temperatures remain locked well below normal. Afternoon readings struggle to climb above the 20s, while wind chills plunge toward zero or below tonight. Prolonged cold increases the risk of frostbite, hypothermia, and frozen pipes. Even treated roads may refreeze quickly after snow tapers.

Snow gradually winds down by Sunday morning, but the cold lingers. Sunshine returns Sunday afternoon, though highs only reach the mid-30s. Monday brings clearer skies and slightly milder air, with highs near 40. By Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures rebound into the 40s, though another system may bring rain or a brief wintry mix midweek.

Looking ahead, February starts with sharp temperature swings across the Carolinas as Arctic air retreats, then threatens another return late week.

Avoid unnecessary travel, keep emergency supplies nearby, and check on neighbors who may need help. Conditions can worsen quickly after dark. How much snow are you seeing where you live?
