Florida – Palm fronds rattle in gusty winds as cold air pours south, flipping the seasonal script across northeast Florida. The air feels sharp and dry. Jackets feel suddenly necessary as temperatures tumble fast.

According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, an Extreme Cold Warning, Freeze Warning, and Wind Advisory remain in effect through early Sunday. Wind chills dip into the teens, while actual temperatures fall into the lower to mid-20s inland. Gusts near 30 mph make the cold bite harder, especially before sunrise.

Jacksonville starts the morning near 50, but readings fall steadily through the day as strong northwest winds surge in. By tonight, skies clear and temperatures drop quickly. Inland neighborhoods and low-lying areas face the highest freeze risk. Bridges along I-95, I-10, and the Buckman Bridge cool rapidly, though widespread icing is not expected.

Sunday brings bright sun but little warmth. Highs struggle into the mid-40s, and wind chills stay uncomfortable. Frost develops again Sunday night as winds ease and temperatures slip into the upper 20s. Residents should protect pipes, bring pets indoors, and cover sensitive plants. Generators and grills should never be used indoors.

By Monday, sunshine continues and temperatures rebound into the low 50s. Another round of frost remains possible early, especially west of downtown. Tuesday turns milder, with highs reaching the low 60s. Attention then shifts to midweek, when clouds increase and rain chances return as February settles in.

This cold snap follows a broader Arctic outbreak stretching from the Midwest to the Southeast, with the Great Lakes now nearly half frozen. The pattern relaxes later next week, but for now, winter has Florida’s attention.

Heading out early or late today? How cold did it feel where you are?
