North Carolina – Snowflakes swirl sideways across parking lots and tree lines this morning as cold air presses deeper into the state. Wind rattles signs and lifts loose powder from untreated roads. The cold feels sharp and immediate, with wind chills already near single digits across central North Carolina.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through early Sunday for much of central North Carolina, including the Triangle. Snow totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected around Raleigh, with higher localized amounts possible. At the same time, an Extreme Cold Warning and Cold Weather Advisory remain in effect, with wind chills dropping as low as 5 below.

Snow develops steadily through the day, becoming heavier at times before tapering later tonight. Roads will deteriorate quickly, especially bridges and overpasses along I-40, I-440, and US-1. Blowing snow may reduce visibility, making travel difficult even where accumulations appear modest. If you must drive, slow down and expect sudden slick spots.

Behind the storm, Arctic air tightens its grip. Sunday stays cold and blustery, with highs near 31 and wind chills near zero during the morning. Any snow that melts briefly during daylight may refreeze quickly after sunset, raising the risk for black ice into early Monday.

Looking ahead, conditions turn quieter but remain cold early next week. Sunshine returns Monday with highs near 39. By Tuesday, temperatures climb into the mid-40s. Midweek brings another chance for mixed precipitation as a cold front approaches, keeping winter weather concerns on the table into the first full week of February.

Dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Traveling today or Sunday? What are conditions like where you are?
