New York State – A brittle, biting cold grips the region this morning, tightening its hold as wind scours city streets and open bridges. Breath hangs in the air. Pavement looks dry but feels slick. Temperatures hover near 10 degrees in the city, with wind chills dropping toward 5 below in exposed areas, creating a real risk for flash freezing after any melting.

According to the National Weather Service, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through late Sunday morning for New York City, Long Island, and nearby parts of northeast New Jersey. Wind chills between 5 below and 10 below are expected at times, especially before midday, with hypothermia possible without proper protection.

Across the metro, north and northwest winds continue to funnel Arctic air down avenues and along shorelines. Bridges, ramps, and untreated roads may ice quickly, particularly where sunlight briefly softens surfaces before temperatures fall again. Transit platforms and sidewalks can turn slick fast. Drivers should slow down and leave extra space, especially on parkways and elevated roadways.

This cold snap does not stand alone. A larger Arctic pattern is pressing across much of the eastern United States, while the Great Lakes sit nearly half frozen, reinforcing cold air delivery into the Northeast. As February begins, temperatures stay below seasonal averages, with brisk winds adding bite into Monday.

By midweek, attention turns to a reinforcing cold front sliding down the I-95 corridor. While widespread precipitation signals remain limited for now, any passing snow showers or melt during daylight hours could refreeze after sunset, increasing collision risks during commutes.

Conditions gradually moderate later in the week, but winter remains firmly in control. More advisories could follow if winds strengthen or temperatures dip further. Heading out today? Dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and tell us how cold it felt where you live.
