TALLAHASSEE, Florida — An extremely cold Arctic air mass is moving into the region tonight, prompting the National Weather Service in Tallahassee to issue an Extreme Cold Warning for parts of the Florida Panhandle, Big Bend, southwest Georgia, and southeast Alabama through Sunday afternoon.

Low temperatures are expected to fall to 16 to 21 degrees, with dangerously cold wind chills ranging from 2 to 10 degrees, conditions rarely seen across this part of Florida. The coldest period is expected Saturday night into early Sunday morning, when exposure risks will be highest.

Travelers along Interstate 10 and surrounding roadways should prepare for very cold driving conditions, particularly overnight when temperatures drop into the single digits in some rural areas. While widespread wintry precipitation is not expected, strong winds may reduce visibility at times and increase the risk of hypothermia for anyone stranded or outdoors for extended periods.

In addition to the extreme cold, a Wind Advisory is in effect as gusty winds follow Saturday’s cold front. Sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, are expected across inland areas and along the coast. These winds will significantly amplify the cold, making it feel much colder than the actual air temperature.

Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and ensure pets, plants, and exposed plumbing are protected from freezing conditions. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those without reliable heating, face the greatest risk during this event.

Temperatures will begin to slowly moderate Sunday afternoon, but cold conditions may linger into early next week. Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service as this rare and dangerous cold outbreak unfolds.
