Charleston, West Virginia – Cold winter weather will continue across southern West Virginia through the weekend, with snowfall and prolonged subfreezing temperatures creating hazardous travel conditions on major roadways, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.

Snow is expected to persist at times across southern and southwestern West Virginia, continuing through Saturday, while very cold temperatures linger through Sunday. The combination of snowfall and cold air will lead to slick roads, icy bridges, and reduced visibility, particularly along Interstate 64, Interstate 77, US-119, and surrounding secondary roads.

Forecasters note that Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for portions of the region. In addition, an Extreme Cold Watch and Cold Advisories highlight the risk of dangerously low wind chills, especially during overnight and early morning hours. Prolonged exposure to these conditions could result in hypothermia or frostbite.

Snowfall amounts will vary by location, but even lighter accumulations may quickly bond to road surfaces due to cold pavement temperatures. Travel impacts may worsen during nighttime hours when refreezing occurs, increasing the risk for black ice.

Some improvement is expected Monday, when daytime temperatures rise above freezing for portions of the area. This brief moderation may continue into midweek, offering temporary relief from the cold. However, until temperatures rise, road conditions may remain hazardous, particularly in shaded and higher-elevation areas.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra travel time, and monitor local forecasts. Residents are also encouraged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and ensure pets and vulnerable individuals have adequate protection from the cold.
