Gurnee, IL – Residents on the autism spectrum in Gurnee and surrounding Lake County communities now have access to a new program designed to make police interactions safer and less stressful.
According to the Gurnee Police Department, the agency officially launched the Blue Envelope Program on Friday, January 30, in partnership with the Autism Hero Project. The initiative is aimed at improving communication between police officers and individuals on the autism spectrum, particularly during traffic stops and other routine encounters.
The program provides participants with a clearly identifiable blue envelope that can be presented to an officer. Inside, individuals may include important documents such as identification, vehicle registration, insurance, emergency contacts, and written communication preferences. Officers trained on the program can then adjust their approach to better meet the individual’s needs.
“This program is about understanding and respect,” said Gurnee Police Chief Jeremy Gaughan. “By giving officers tools to recognize unique communication needs, we can reduce stress, prevent misunderstandings, and ensure safer encounters for everyone.”
Participation in the Blue Envelope Program is voluntary, free, and does not require registration or proof of an autism diagnosis. Anyone on the autism spectrum who lives, works, or regularly spends time in Gurnee is eligible to receive one.
Blue Envelopes are available at multiple locations throughout Gurnee and Lake County, including the Gurnee Police Department, Gurnee Park District facilities, School District 56 and Woodland School District 50 offices, the Warren-Newport Public Library, and the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center.
Police emphasized that the program does not exempt participants from law enforcement actions, and officers from other jurisdictions may not yet be familiar with the Blue Envelope.
Residents are encouraged to share the information with family members, caregivers, and educators throughout the Chicagoland area.
