Newport, North Carolina – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across much of eastern North Carolina as heavy snow and gusty winds are expected to create dangerous, potentially life-threatening travel conditions through Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, 8 to 12 inches of snow are forecast, with locally higher amounts possible, across portions of eastern North Carolina. Wind gusts up to 40 mph may accompany the storm. The warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Friday until 4 p.m. EST Sunday.
Counties included in the warning are Duplin, Jones, Pamlico, Craven, Carteret, and Onslow, including inland and coastal areas. Affected communities include New Bern, Jacksonville, Morehead City, Havelock, Kinston-area surroundings, Emerald Isle, Atlantic Beach, Swansboro, Sneads Ferry, Kenansville, Warsaw, Bayboro, and Oriental.
Forecasters warn that whiteout conditions are expected at times, with blowing and drifting snow sharply reducing visibility. Travel may become treacherous and potentially life-threatening, especially during periods of heavier snowfall and stronger wind. Roads are likely to become snow-covered and impassable, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and secondary routes.
The National Weather Service urges residents to delay all travel if possible. Those who must travel should use extreme caution and carry emergency supplies such as food, water, and a flashlight in case they become stranded. Current road conditions across North Carolina can be checked by calling 511.
Snowfall of this magnitude is rare for coastal and inland eastern North Carolina and may overwhelm road treatment efforts, leading to prolonged hazardous conditions. Ferry operations, emergency response, and utility restoration could be impacted during the height of the storm.
Residents, commuters, and weekend travelers are encouraged to closely monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management officials as conditions continue to evolve.
