Raleigh, North Carolina – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across central North Carolina as heavy snow is expected to significantly disrupt travel through early Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, snowfall totals between 5 and 8 inches are forecast across much of the Piedmont and western Sandhills, beginning 4 p.m. Friday and lasting until 7 a.m. Sunday.

Counties under the warning include Forsyth, Guilford, Alamance, Orange, Durham, Wake, Davidson, Randolph, Chatham, Moore, Lee, Anson, Richmond, and surrounding areas. Cities affected range from Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Chapel Hill, and Cary to Pinehurst, Sanford, Albemarle, Wadesboro, and Rockingham.

The National Weather Service warns that roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become slick and hazardous, with travel conditions deteriorating rapidly as snowfall intensifies. Officials caution that travel may become very difficult or impossible at times, particularly late Saturday into early Sunday.

Drivers are urged to delay travel if possible. Those who must be on the road should use extreme caution and carry a winter storm kit, including blankets, extra clothing, water, a flashlight, and emergency supplies in case of becoming stranded.

Snowfall of this magnitude is uncommon in central North Carolina and can overwhelm road treatment efforts, especially during overnight hours when temperatures remain below freezing. Commuters, students, and shift workers should plan for potential closures and delays through the weekend.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management as conditions evolve.
