Wakefield, Virginia – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for portions of southeast Virginia as heavy snow and strong winds are expected to create dangerous, potentially life-threatening travel conditions through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, 5 to 9 inches of snow are forecast, with locally higher amounts possible, across parts of southeast Virginia. Wind gusts up to 45 mph are expected to accompany the storm. The warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Saturday until 7 p.m. EST Sunday.
Areas included in the warning are Southampton County, Isle of Wight County, the city of Suffolk, York County, Newport News, and Hampton/Poquoson.
Forecasters warn that whiteout conditions are expected at times, significantly reducing visibility and making travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Roads are likely to become snow-covered and impassable during periods of heavy snowfall and blowing snow. Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches, increasing the risk of power outages and blocked roadways.
The National Weather Service urges residents to delay all travel if possible. Those who must travel should use extreme caution and carry emergency supplies such as food, water, and a flashlight. Current road conditions can be obtained by calling 511.
Snowfall combined with strong winds may slow snow removal efforts and prolong hazardous conditions well into Sunday, particularly for commuters and essential workers.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local officials as conditions change throughout the weekend.
