Blacksburg, Virginia – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for northwest North Carolina as heavy snow and powerful wind gusts threaten hazardous travel and potential tree damage through Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, 4 to 7 inches of snow are expected across Ashe, Alleghany, and Watauga counties, with wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. The warning is in effect through 1 p.m. EST Sunday.

Communities affected include Boone, West Jefferson, and Sparta, along with surrounding mountain areas.

Forecasters warn that travel could be very difficult, with conditions deteriorating rapidly at times. Hazardous weather may impact the Friday evening commute, particularly on higher elevations and exposed roadways. Bridges, mountain passes, and secondary roads are expected to become slick and snow-covered.

Strong winds developing Saturday night into Sunday are expected to cause blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility and creating near-whiteout conditions in exposed areas. The combination of heavy snow and high winds may also result in downed trees and isolated power outages.

Drivers who must travel are advised to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, and to check current road conditions by calling 511 before departing. Officials stress that conditions in the mountains can change rapidly, especially during periods of strong wind.

Mountain snowfall combined with high winds can slow snow removal efforts and prolong hazardous conditions into Sunday, particularly for early-morning and overnight travelers.

Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management officials as the storm progresses.
