Chicago, Illinois – A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for northwest Indiana as intense lake-effect snow is expected to create extremely hazardous travel conditions through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, over 6 inches of snow is expected in Lake and Porter counties, with isolated totals up to 12 inches possible, especially near and north of U.S. Route 30. The warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 p.m. CST Saturday.

Communities affected include Gary, Hammond, Merrillville, Valparaiso, Chesterton, and Portage.

Forecasters warn that snowfall rates may exceed 2 inches per hour under the most intense lake-effect bands, leading to near whiteout conditions at times. Travel could become very difficult to nearly impossible, particularly in areas north of U.S. 30 where the heaviest snow is expected.

The most intense snowfall is forecast late Friday evening through Saturday morning. While brief breaks in snowfall are possible as lake-effect bands shift, conditions may deteriorate rapidly with little warning as bands redevelop.

The National Weather Service cautions that lake-effect snow can cause dramatic differences in conditions over short distances, with heavy snow and near-zero visibility occurring just miles away from dry roads. Drivers should be prepared for sudden changes in visibility and road conditions.

Residents are urged to monitor the latest forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy snow. Commuters and overnight workers in affected areas should plan for extended delays or hazardous conditions through Saturday.
