Raleigh, North Carolina – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for eastern North Carolina as heavy snow and strong wind gusts are expected to create dangerous travel conditions through Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, 6 to 9 inches of snow are forecast across the Coastal Plain and eastern Sandhills, with localized higher totals possible. The warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Friday through 1 p.m. Sunday.

Counties included in the warning are Halifax, Nash, Edgecombe, Johnston, Wilson, Harnett, Wayne, Scotland, Hoke, Cumberland, and Sampson. Affected communities include Fayetteville, Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, Wilson, Clinton, Smithfield, Laurinburg, Dunn, Lillington, Raeford, and Roanoke Rapids.

In addition to heavy snowfall, wind gusts up to 35 mph may lead to blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility and complicating road conditions. The National Weather Service warns that roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become slick and hazardous, especially from Saturday into early Sunday.

Officials advise residents to delay all travel if possible. Those who must travel should drive with extreme caution and carry emergency supplies such as blankets, water, flashlights, and extra clothing in case they become stranded.

Snowfall combined with wind may slow snow removal efforts and lead to prolonged hazardous conditions, particularly for overnight and early-morning travel. Commuters, students, and essential workers should prepare for potential closures, delays, and extended disruptions.

Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring official updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies as the storm develops.
