Salem, OR – A routine late-night traffic stop in northeast Salem early Wednesday led to the arrest of a convicted felon and the seizure of firearms, ammunition, and suspected methamphetamine, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, the incident occurred at approximately 1:13 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, when a deputy observed a red Dodge Ram drifting over the center line while traveling southbound on Hawthorne Avenue NE near Monroe Avenue NE. Authorities say the vehicle was traveling about 35 mph in a posted 25 mph zone, prompting the traffic stop.

During the stop, deputies said the driver was unable to provide a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, or current vehicle registration. Due to the expired registration and lack of insurance, the truck was towed from the scene.

While conducting a search of the vehicle, deputies reportedly discovered a bolt-action rifle concealed beneath the rear seat. Further investigation allegedly uncovered additional firearms, ammunition, and suspected methamphetamine. One of the firearms was also found to have an altered serial number, authorities said.

The driver was identified as Joshua Edwards, 36, of Salem. According to deputies, Edwards is a convicted felon and is legally prohibited from possessing firearms.

Edwards was taken into custody without incident and later lodged at the Marion County Jail.

Authorities say Edwards faces multiple charges, including felon in possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, and altered identification on a firearm. The case remains under investigation, and all charges are allegations pending court proceedings.

Residents in the area are encouraged to report suspicious activity and remain aware of late-night traffic enforcement efforts throughout Salem and Marion County.
